Volume 3 – Cold wave

1

The busy day continued as Aran summoned Jiyul and the leaders under his command to set up daily meetings and strategies and to collect maps of the Palace and Capital to examine locations and the topography. Although he acted with an aloof attitude, Ryugen could not be matched by anyone, and he was by Aran’s side as much as he could making the work easier.

The factions and soldiers in opposition to Taejeokrune also continued to gather. Aran calmly adjusted to the busy pace. Jiyul in particular was helpful to him, without him, Aran wouldn’t have accomplished much.

Aran had to work hard to measure up to all the planning and preparation that Jiyul had put into this venture for such a long time, and for the many people who stood by and supported the late King. He could not delay for even a short period of time. Just as Jiyul and Ryugen had said, this was the perfect time and he didn’t want to miss it, especially if he wanted to save his brother Won as soon as possible.

It was also true that he wanted to see Cain. Even though he was well aware that this was not the time to think of Cain yet, the longing that he felt whenever he stopped for a moment inevitably grew deeper. Each time Aran caught himself longing for him, he reprimanded himself.

Today it was like that too. It was a dark day, with gray clouds covering the sky all morning, as Aran headed to the training grounds early in order to clear his head. As always, Shaw naturally followed close behind him. Then he suddenly had an idea and drew his sword on Shaw.

“Why don’t we have a match after such a long time?”

He hadn’t given up his sword training for a single day, but since coming here he hadn’t had a real sparring match with Shaw. Shaw hesitated for a moment, then walked over and got a sword. It seemed burdensome to spar with a real sword, but Aran lightly swung his sword and waited for Shaw. ‘Don’t go easy on me.’ he added as a request.

Soon, the sharp sounds of blades clashing loudly against one another echoed through the training hall.

KaChing-

Whenever their blades collided against each other, it was as if blue sparks could be seen in the air. Their swords repeatedly hit and fell so hard, it felt as though they would break at any moment. Shaw used enough skill and stamina that it made it difficult to speak, but Aran put up a fight against him without losing ground.

Because Aran learned swordsmanship and martial arts from Jar and had practiced for such a long time, his moves were different from Shaw’s, who used the Kajang style of swordsmanship. Shaw had a hard time dealing with Aran, who had mastered swordsmanship which was so different from Kajangs’. However, Shaw was by no means an easy opponent. Neither of them would give up easily.

Ching-Kang –

Shaw had been pushed back for a while, but with a loud sound, he sprang from the ground in an instant. His movement was so fast that Aran couldn’t even see it properly, this was because Shaw had employed his special attack. Aran had forgotten about it because he had been away from him for such a long time, but seeing it again he was impressed with his great sense of speed.

Ah-!”

After a brief moment of confusion, Shaw swung his sword across Aran’s shoulder pushing into his weak point. Aran managed to block it with his sword as he clicked his tongue, but the blade could not withstand the strong force and snapped off into the air with a sharp sound. Aran stared blankly upon seeing his sword broken in half and quickly retreated backward.

However, Shaw did not go easy on him, and he swung his sword again. The counterattack that followed, without giving even a little room to maneuver, left Aran in a cold sweat. Aran, who had no weapon after having his sword cut in two, reflexively put his hand on his waist.

It was a long-held idiosyncratic habit and couldn’t be undone. In an emergency, he would pull the dagger that never leaves his side even when he sleeps. Even now Aran reached for the dagger that was always on his waist, that’s when he felt that something was wrong. When he first met Cain he had given him the dagger to protect himself, but now it wasn’t there!

“Prince-!”

Shaw made the loud sound in embarrassment. Shaw was convinced that Aran would somehow block it and continued the attack, but instead of defending, Aran suddenly stopped and stood there. Shaw was left in astonishment. Shaw bit down and swung his sword. However, Aran’s black blade had already been broken when Shaw slashed across Aran’s shoulder earlier, and now Shaw’s sharp blue blade tore through Aran’s clothes and splattered his red blood everywhere.

Crack-

Red blood dripped down on the pure white snow. Aran looked down at the wound on his shoulder and couldn’t even blink. He couldn’t feel the pain. He couldn’t even lift his fingertips and became stiff. He thought to himself that he had made an absurd mistake.

The dagger….. he had completely forgotten that he’d left it in Cain’s bedroom! That day when Cain embraced him and he escaped from the Palace like he was running away, he had left it behind with the intention of returning to him…. but he even had forgotten that!

“Oh my God, Prince!”

Shaw threw his sword on the frozen ground. After seeing the blood dripping down Aran’s left shoulder and arm onto the snowy ground, his complexion turned pale.

“How did this happen….”

Shaw reproached himself in a low voice, and immediately tore the hem of his clothes and began to bind the open wound. His fingers that were covering Aran’s wound, were visibly trembling. At that moment Aran came to his senses and took a small breath as he took Shaw’s shaky hand.

“It’s okay.”

“I’m sorry, I should have been a little more focused.”

“No, it’s all my fault. You did nothing wrong.”

Looking at Shaw’s face which was paler than his own, his heart felt incredibly heavy. It was a really stupid mistake!

“I forgot I didn’t have my dagger.”

Aran said disappointedly, as a bitter smile spread across his lips. It was hard to imagine. It had been a while since he had held it in his hands, so he had forgotten that he’d left the dagger on his way out.

“A habit that I’ve held for ten years cannot be easily broken.”

Aran said in a light tone as he focused his gaze on his shoulder, where Shaw was tying up the wound. It didn’t look like he was stabbed too deeply, but blood was still leaking out and soiling the edges of his clothes. It would be uncomfortable to move his arm for a while.

“Did you have it for such a long time?”

Shaw asked calmly, thinking about Aran’s wound. Aran nodded without a word.

“It must have been something precious.”

“… It was.”

Because it’s the first thing Cain gave me.-

The words that had risen up to his throat were muffled without ever being spoken. Shaw didn’t ask anymore. He just remained quiet as though it didn’t need to be heard.

“Let’s find another dagger for you to use.”

Shaw lifted Aran up. As he was moved, a hot throbbing pain spread, and his forehead furrowed. He had to clench his jaw to prevent himself from groaning. Shaw seemed to understand his condition and he stepped back and let out a low sigh.

“First I need to let the war council know about this. The wound is large so you won’t be able to use your left arm for a while.”

“That’ll be hard for you to tell.”

“No, it won’t.”

Aran was only teasing, but Shaw couldn’t hide his rigid expression. Aran wasn’t sure whether Shaw was angry because he hurt him, or because of the way he handled it, but one thing was clear, Shaw was angry. Aran sighed as he looked at Shaw’s unfamiliar dark expression.

Aran looked away and spoke softly, because of the awkward atmosphere

“Jiyul will be worried when he sees it.”

Shaw said nothing. Having nothing to add to the heavy silence, Aran also remained silent as well. Aran knew perfectly well that Shaw was worried for him, so he couldn’t blame him.

Aran slowly descended the snowy path supported by Shaw. The sound of the snow crunching underfoot was cold, but the warmth radiating from Shaw as he held him, was as warm as ever.

“So you found me?”

When Aran was having his wound treated he heard that Jiyul was looking for him, so he immediately went to the main house. The air was cold in the room where Jiyul had been waiting alone for Aran. The tip of his nose was now sore because there was no heating. Aran gently pulled up the cloak that he had wrapped around his shoulders and went inside.

“I have good news for you.”

Said Jiyul, he then got up to greet Aran.

“Good news?”

“Yes, some of the late King’s ministers who had not yet made a decision, either way, have informed us that they will join us after hearing the news of the Prince’s arrival.”

As he said, it was certainly good news but Aran did not respond.

It would have been more commendable if those ministers of the late King had volunteered before the big event to help increase their strength. Nevertheless, whatever their pretext, Jiyul didn’t betray his emotions by rejoicing, so Aran didn’t either.

“First of all, we have decided to meet them in the vicinity of Yeho next week.”

“… Yeho?”

The war had entered its final countdown. At a time when prudence had to be exercised, the risks were high if the central figures gathered near the capital city of Yeho. This was the time when he had to worry, there was nothing else Aran could do about it because the ministers couldn’t be taken out of the capital.

“I’ll go there alone.”

Jiyul said to Aran.

“Alone!?”

“Yes. They are certainly people who sincerely want to fix the country and help the Prince, but we must also be suspicious, some of them may have been bought by Taejeokrune.”

“Bought……”

“Of course, I may just be a simple old man, and in truth, this is a difficult matter to deal with. But, as always, no one should be completely trusted.”

Aran laughed bitterly. Of course, it was natural. Who can you fully trust in a situation like this? In particular, if they’re going out of their way to join the group, that would inevitably raise suspicions first.

“That’s right.”

“Unfortunately, there was someone suspicious, so I asked him to come alone. After all, if things don’t go well, I can finish it by myself.”

Jiyul’s tone of voice was as calm as usual. But his words caused the air in the room to become heavy in an instant. Aran silently tapped the table with his fingertips. The monotonous sound echoed loudly thr the cold space.

He seemed to understand Jiyul’s concerns. In order to fully prepare, especially for war with Taejeokrune, whom no one has the strength and cleverness to match so far, they would need the greatest number of people and support as possible. It would be an even greater force if the old Ministers could join. So at this point, they might even have to consider suspicious people as well, it might be too difficult to turn them away.

Even so, answering as to whether he would allow Jiyul to go alone took a while, it wasn’t an easy decision. The silence was getting longer and heavier. In the space where even a pin drop could be heard, it was an unexpected person who broke the silence.

“Hey, everyone has gathered.”

Suddenly the door opened and a carefree voice that did not match the atmosphere of this place was heard. He was someone Aran could recognize without having to look back.

“Ryugen.”

“I came to see you as soon as I heard you were injured. How did you make such a mistake Escort?”

Jiyul glared at Ryugen who was approaching Aran without a greeting, and with an inappropriate gaze.

“Are you hurt? What do you mean by that?”

However, rather than paying attention to Ryugen’s rude manners, he paid more attention to what he said. Aran looked at Ryugen with a troubled expression, but all he could do was shrug his shoulders. Is it ignorant or is it on purpose?

“It’s nothing. You have nothing to worry about.”

Aran dismissed it coldly. Jiyul looked like he wanted to ask more, but when he saw  Aran’s cold expression he shut his mouth. Meanwhile, Ryugen approached the table they were sitting at and sat down. Jiyul’s sharp gaze turned to him again.

The uninvited guest spoke unreasonably to Prince Aran and behaved arbitrarily. However, even putting aside the fact that Prince Aran brought him with him, Jiyul was able to quickly see that Ryugen was able to obtain important information, demonstrating exactly why Aran was forcing himself to put up with his reckless way of treating The Prince.

“Okay. There was something I wanted to say too.”

Ryugen spoke first, breaking the uncomfortable atmosphere. Aran wondered what it was that he really wanted to say as he looked back at Ryugen and pretended not to notice the uncomfortable energy that was circulating between them.

“What is it?”

“I was a little leery because I’m supposed to meet with powerful people next week.”

“And…?”

“In case you don’t already know, I sent a messenger to each of the people who decided to meet. I put a shadow on each of the five people.”

Even though he appeared frivolous, he was a reliable person. Aran nodded his head at Ryugen who had finished doing his job without having to be told. Then, Ryugen raised the tip of his lips at an angle to face Aran.

“By the way, there are orders that if there’s a confirmation, or if someone sees you with their own eyes, they’re to cut your throat on the spot.”

The heavy words that he spoke didn’t match his light tone of voice. Jiyul, Aran, and even Shaw stared at Ryugen at once without hiding their surprise. But, as always, he was consistent in his carefree attitude.

“There is no such thing as a risky free plan, it’ll be like trying to push through to the end even with uncertain feelings. Besides, this is Taejeokrune, it took him just three days to defeat the late King and usurped the throne. If a mistake is made, we will all die before the war even starts.”

“That’s why I said I was going alone.”

Jiyul interrupted Ryugen and frowned. Regardless, it didn’t seem right to give an order to shoot him on the spot. Unlike Jiyul, Aran who was watching them silently smiled faintly.

“Alright.”

Jiyul raised his head as Ryugen replied. Aran, who was waiting for Ryugen to give a contradictory retort, looked surprised.

“To me, Jiyul, and the people who are here now, are more important than the lives of people who are already dead. Especially Jiyul, I won’t lose you over such a trivial thing.”

“Prince….”

“Aren’t you the one who made all the plans to strike Taejeokrune? You’re the General and strongest pillar of support, you can’t get hurt or die.”

Aran knew that without Jiyul’s efforts, who’s been working hard and handling everything so far, he wouldn’t be back now. Especially since there are some people who will still look at him as a soft little Prince who doesn’t know how to do anything. Therefore Jiyul was essential to the plan and was irreplaceable. So he couldn’t be lost no matter what!

“I’m sorry.”

Aran glanced at him as he spoke with his head bowed, and let out a small sigh. Even so, he knew that Jiyul had to go. They have already come this far and were about to make their move, but if they don’t go out and meet more with people for fear of coming across someone in cahoots with Taejeokrune, then they’ll never have enough allies.

“If you think it is important to meet the Minister, you should take a few enlisted men with you. If you don’t want me to go to meet him too, I won’t. Instead, I will follow you to Yeho and protect you.”

“Prince, with respect…….”

“It’s good, I’ve been wanting to see Yeho too after such a long time.”

Jiyul had an anxious expression on his face, but Aran did not change his decision. Then, Ryugen suddenly laughed out loud.

“Little prince, if you think you should go then I have no intention of stopping you. But there’s one thing you should be careful of.”

Aran looked at Ryugen as he put his face right in front of Aran. Aran frowned at his sudden movement, but Rygen just joked about it, by pointing something out to him with an inappropriate gaze.

“What?”

“Just don’t forget just how conspicuous you are.”

Whispered Ryugen softly as he ran his fingertips across Aran’s smooth cheeks. Aran tensed and roughly removed his hand. ‘I’m too conspicuous.’ That warning sounded familiar to his ears. Weren’t those the same words that Cain had used before?

“Too conspicuous to be of use?”

It was almost as though he could hear Cain click his tongue and scold him. At the same time, a part of his heart clenched reflexively. Aran sighed briefly to endure the sharp pain as Ryugen clicked his tongue, and stood up from his seat.

“And finally, I think I’m going to have to leave for a while. I told you all what I came here to say.”

“… Are you leaving?”

“l have someone I need to meet.”

Ryugen muttered in an embarrassed tone, as he rubbed his smooth chin. It was suspicious but Aran pretended not to notice and kept quiet. There was no way he could interrogate him further and there was no reason to ask him to stay. In any case, he was doing the best he could, and that was enough for Aran.

“I’ll come back as soon as possible.”

“Yes, I would appreciate that.”

When Aran answered indifferently, Ryugen left the room with an attitude like he had completed his business. Again, there were three remaining seats, but no one spoke about the conclusion that Ryugen had reached before leaving. Besides, there was a mountain of things to discuss.

Sleet scattered down from the sky. Even if it wasn’t heavy snow the temperature was colder because of the small snowflakes that fell and vanished, and then fell again.

As Aran put on a fur hat, and a coat made of leather and fur, he pulled up the top of the coat to cover his lower face and thought that it was fortunate that it was still cold. As Cain and Ryugen had said, his face was way too conspicuous and had to be covered, so there is no better condition than the cold. He raised the hood that covered his face and walked around the capital alongside Shaw.

Yeho, the capital of Kajang, was not large compared to Shâtteun. In Shâtteun there were not only the people of the Empire but also people from various other countries who came to trade, so its market size was incomparable to Yeho’s, whose atmosphere felt more closed off. However, Aran, who had only seen the lively sights of Shâtteun felt a sense of incongruity in Yeho that had subsisted even more than before.

The more he looked around the capital the more he saw how difficult life had become, and Jiyul’s explanation that the people’s outlook had become bleak and that the atmosphere had deteriorated, was evident. As he said, the streets were quiet, the people’s faces were filled with concern, and the atmosphere of the city itself was gloomy like a gray sky overcast by clouds.

Aran looked around Yeho and let out a long sigh. The image of Cain, who always enjoyed looking around Shâtteun and watching its citizens, came to mind. He said that when he looked at the citizens, he could see what the country was like, and he would sit on the streets peacefully and watch the passersby.

Whenever Aran saw him stretched out like a cat, laying in the dazzling sunlight smoking, abandoning his Imperial look, he’d clicked his tongue internally, but now he missed it so much.

“Prince, today has been a long journey. Why don’t you just eat and rest up?”

At the sound of Shaw’s approaching voice, Aran finally woke up from his thoughts and opened his eyes. As he said, it would be better to rest. Whether it was because of walking all day, or because of the subdued atmosphere, he was a little tired. Even though it was getting dark, the market was still operating.

The place that Aran silently followed Shaw to was a Guest House that operated a restaurant on the first floor, and an Inn on the second floor. Aran looked around the restaurant where there were only a few people sitting and eating and sat down wiping the snow from his shoulders. Then one of the serving boys quickly ran over and served them hot tea. Shaw went behind him across the dining room. He told Aran to wait for a while, it seems that he even rented a room at the Inn, along with ordering a meal.

It was something Aran felt anew, that as long as Shaw was by his side there was nothing to worry about. Even when he was hungry or tired, Shaw took care of him without having to say anything out loud. It was a bittersweet thing, the feeling that he was subconsciously leaning on him and relying on him.

He had always been alone. Ever since he lost his family and ran away from Taejeokrune, he was always alone making decisions by himself, and taking responsibility for himself. Even if Cain had been by his side, Cain was far from showing the kind of care given by Shaw. Rather than that, Cain tended to let him do everything on his own. Isn’t Cain the man who from the beginning gave him a dagger and said, ‘You must protect your own body’?

That was Cain’s way and he knew Cain well, so he didn’t want anything. In fact, he didn’t even want to rely on him. In fact, he developed a desire to become more like him and to become his equal in earnest.

However, he couldn’t shake the thought that he seemed to be gradually changing as he was alone with Shaw. Without realizing it, he started depending on him and he started looking forward to it. Maybe these years where he had to endure alone without relying on anyone had been lonely. Perhaps the kindness he had not received from anyone else just felt good.

“Shaw, if I hadn’t parted ways with you, I’d be a mess by now.”

“What are you talking about?”

Instead of putting the spoon neatly in front of Aran, Shaw turned to him with an expression that said he did not understand what he meant. Watching Shaw with such an expression brought a small smile to Aran’s face.

“In a sense, I think it’s fortunate that I parted ways with you for a while and grew up in Cain’s hands.”

“Is there something you don’t like about me?”

“No, it’s not that at all. Rather, it’s because you’re so good to me that it turns me into an idiot.”

“That’s not possible. It’s just that The Prince is the type of person who tries too hard to do everything by himself.”

Shaw just continued to put delicious food on Aran’s plate, but he didn’t get it at all. Aran smiled bitterly.

Then he looked at the food he had laid out and opened his mouth.

“… You don’t know how lucky I feel to have you by my side.”

The day that Jiyul had chosen to meet with the ministers, was the day after tomorrow. He said that it was in a village not far from Yeho, the capital city. Therefore, Aran planned to visit Yeho in advance and then move on to the village two days later in order to join Jiyul, but the more he thought about it, the more anxiety he felt.

Of all the Ministers they were supposed to meet, Aran didn’t know if any of them were in league with Taejeorune, or what position they would take. Also, there hadn’t been any news from Ryugen for a week. Thinking that there is no end to things, Aran shook his head and shoved the food into his mouth.

There was in fact, there is no room for fear and anxiety about what may or may not happen. The die had already been cast, and it was much too early to give into fear. There was no reason to be afraid yet. So Aran calmed his mind as much as possible and waited for the time to pass.

“Shaw, one moment.”

Aran, who had been quietly chewing his food until then, spoke softly. Shaw, who had been eating his dinner while taking care of Aran more than himself, stopped moving and opened his eyes.

“If anything happens while we’re meeting with the ministers, you must save Jiyul first.”

“What do you mean?”

The expression on Shaw’s face became rigid and he put down his chopsticks.

“No one knows that I am attending their gathering, and there aren’t many people who know my face anyway. Even when I was young I rarely met the Ministers, so there will be even fewer people who could recognize me now. Maybe some of them won’t even believe the news that I’m back in Kajang.”

“…….”

“Doesn’t that work in my favor? I’ll be able to get out of there somehow. But it’s different for Jiyul. Everyone knows him, and they know he is leading the rebellion.”

Aran poured hot tea as he calmly spoke. He had a calm face as though he were just talking about daily life. However Shaw’s face had gradually darkened, and finally, he shook his head.

“Prince, no matter how important he is there is no one more important to protect than you.”

“I know how to wield a sword, and I know how to protect myself. So this time you must listen to me.”

“With all due respect-.” ¹

“I need his wisdom. No matter what happens, I can’t lose him now. Just this once Jiyul has to be the priority.”

There was no wavering in his eyes as he faced Shaw. His determined face also showed the resolution in his heart. Shaw clenched his fists, no matter how much he tried to persuade him his stubbornness would not be broken.

“Then can you make me a promise? Will you promise me that no matter what happens, you will come back to me unarmed? Can you tell me that you will come back just as you are now, without even a hair touched or a finger hurt?”

The trembling in Shaw’s voice was obvious. He wasn’t confident, but if anything happened to Aran while he was not there…… It seemed unbearable.

“Of course.”

Replied Shaw calmly to Aran, but he kept clenching his fists which were hidden under the table, and let out a long sigh.

He was anxious. It seemed that he was not aware of it, but as time passed, Aran felt more and more anxious. It all felt precarious, like standing on a fragile sheet of ice. Besides, didn’t he lose his mind during a sword fight just a little while ago, and for another reason, he didn’t have his dagger?

He pretends to be unwavering on the outside, but he feels differently inside. He felt like a completely different person from when he was in Cain’s castle. Maybe it was because of Cain, he wasn’t sure, but the more he thought about it, the more difficult it was to control his heart, which felt like it was getting heavier and heavier.

“Shaw.”

Then Aran called quietly as though he was worried, Shaw raised his gloomy gaze.

“I Promise. I will never get hurt or killed in your absence.”

“Prince…….”

“I will probably always look like a child to you, but I am not that weak.”

“If you promise me so, I will obey your orders.”

Shaw, who was unable to be stubborn any longer, bowed his head. Aran was silent for a short time, then emptied the teacup and spoke again.

“Of course, nothing may happen, and it may pass quietly. Maybe it’s just because I’m impatient that I’m worrying for nothing. So don’t be too concerned.”

“…….”

“And if something bad happens, it will be the same. When entering a tiger’s den you just must be alert, so if you stay prepared all the time nothing too bad will happen.”

His profile was still and he was staring off into a void like he was thinking of something. He didn’t know whether he was thinking about something in the distant past or something in the future.

“All right.”

Shaw answered in a muffled voice. That was when Aran suddenly reached out and grabbed Shaw’s hand and brought his head closer. Shaw was surprised by his sudden closeness and was unable to speak. Then Aran whispered as he stared at Shaw with a serious, subdued look again.

“There is one more thing you need to hear.”

“Please say it.”

“You mustn’t get hurt either.”

As Shaw bowed my head and waited for an order, an unexpected request was made and Shaw opened his eyes in amazement.

“Remember that I think of you the same as you think of me.”

“…….”

“You are like family, you’ve been by my side since I was little. When I think of my childhood, when was still in the royal castle of Kajang, the person I remember the most is you.”

Shaw couldn`t speak easily. His throat was choked like there was a stone in it, so he couldn’t make a sound.

“Even if you are not blood, even if you are in a military (service) relationship with me, you are a very precious person to me. You’re the closest person to me, and you are the only person I can lean on, even now…”

Aran’s sincere confession, which surprised Shaw, calmly continued. Needless to say, Shaw understood how much Aran trusted and followed him. However, he was overwhelmed with indescribable emotions as he tried to listen. It made him both happy and sad to hear that the only person he can lean on, was someone like him.

“…So, stay by my side forever.”

Whether or not Shaw understood his infinitely complicated feelings, Aran didn’t know.

”… of course.”

Answered Shaw with a small trembling voice. Aran grabbed Shaw’s hand and didn’t let go. Shaw didn`t even think about moving as he sat there lost in thought. He added a promise to protect him from injury anytime, anywhere.
