Volume 3 – Ninty-Nine Moons

1

“What do I do, specifically?”

Hadir suddenly felt saddened by the fact that he could not open his eyes.

He wanted to know what kind of expression the Crown Prince of Ibeden was facing him with at that moment.

The Caliph bloodline was cursed.

It must have been fated from the moment they stepped into the Land of the Gods.

He wondered what it must be like to be abandoned by the Gods, he also wondered about how much of that weight could this young Prince carry.

“I saw ninety-nine moons.”

“Ninety-nine moons?”

“They were all red moons and the Basilisk was not wearing a blindfold.”

Hadir told Leshak about the dream he had right before Leshak found him.

“The red moon signifies the wrath of the Gods. So when the red moon appears, it covers everything in the world with its darkness and nullifies the power of the spirits. So under the red moon, the Basilisk loses its poison.”

Leshak slowly nodded.

“That’s why there were no killings during the bloody moon.”

“After wrath comes forgiveness, and then the consignation of oblivion. Endure ninety-nine reversals of wrath.”

Leshak glanced at him with conspicuous eyes.

“Does that mean afterward, Radan will no longer be the basilisk?”

“That’s right.”

LeShark displayed his even, white teeth. It was a smile.

“Then it shouldn’t be difficult.”

“… …”

No, it couldn’t be.

It took many years for wrath to become oblivion. In order to be forgiven again, one must pay a price.

“It will take a long time. The star’s seat will shift. The cycle of the red moon will continue to diminish, and the moon that now rises nine times in a year will then only rise eight times, and the moon that rises eight times will only rise again seven times.”

Leshak laughed briefly.

“Why is that a problem?”

“In the time in between, the Crown Prince of Ibeden must not take another bride and conceive an heir.”

“Of course, it will be like that! However, that means,”

“It means the Imperial Family will be ended.”

Hadir’s words went far deeper and held more weight than mere anguish.

“It doesn’t matter.”

Leshak dusted off his backside and stood up.

Hadir lifted his head and moved it along with Leshak’s movements.

It was strange. The sounds were too light.

“You mean to cut off the imperial line by your own hand?”

“If I must.”

His answer was also brief.

He didn’t think the answer could be that simple. The Prince of Ibeden had to shoulder more than the agony he had.

“It can’t be……It can’t be. It’s not……”

Hadir suddenly realized why the fire spirit used his dreams.

It was for revenge. The fire spirit and he stood on the same path, holding onto the same thing.

“You are a Caliph……”

No, he was confused.

Was this the heart that wanted the Caliph’s bloodline to suffer, that wanted him to be caught so deeply into a trap from which he would struggle until his limb was torn off, and even then he still wouldn’t be able to escape?

Was this heart really his own? Or was even this an illusion planted by the  Spirit of Fire?

“Stop trying to consider whether it’s a trap, it’s too daunting a task. I have neither time, need, nor the inclination for leisurely thoughts such as  women or producing an heir.”

Hadir followed the Crown Prince with his blind eyes as he was making the most unprincely remarks he had ever heard.

It was odd that it was Leshak who was called the most outstanding monarch of the Caliph bloodline.

“Aren’t you afraid of curses?”

“Afraid?”

Leshak stood up and looked down upon Hadir.

For Leshak, who had been the Crown Prince of the Ibeden Empire ever since birth, this was the posture that suited him the best.

“I am afraid that this has been going on for so long that it may be beyond my reach. I am afraid that my man, whom I’m supposed to protect, has suffered for a long time because of my curse. And I’m afraid because pain can change people.”

Leshak was afraid the day might come when Radan would give up on himself because of the pain.

Leshak was afraid that if that happened, he himself would tie Radan up without hesitation, and Radan would come to be disgusted by him.

“What the last name of the next Emperor will be is a distant and trivial matter. I am not interested in that at the moment.”

For Leshak, it was more important to find ways to make Radan less disgusted with him during the lengthy time they would spend together during the 99 Bloody Moons.

Leshak turned around.

It was time for him to return to Radan.

“In return for the useful information, I will grant you your freedom. You may go anywhere you want.”

“Ah……,”

Hadir opened his mouth in surprise.

He tried to kill the Crown Prince to seek revenge against the Caliphs, luring in the enemy they were at war with.

A wasn’t a crime that would disappear just by saying a word.

“Still……how can you do that?”

“I’ll prepare a horse and guide so come out slowly.”

Leshak left the prison.

Hadir heard nothing but the sound of retreating footsteps, so he knew that Leshak had left the prison door open.

The forgetting was already beginning.

“Hmm……”

Radan was woken up from his sleep by a hand gently stroking his hair.

When he made a mumbling sound, the hand in his hair stopped.

“……Did I wake you up?”

Asked Leshak apologetically. Radan nodded his head.

“Oh, no. I’m so sorry.”

“Still…it doesn’t matter.”

Just as Radan didn’t lie when he was asked as to whether he had woken him up, when he said it didn’t matter, he meant it.

Radan then rubbed the blindfold with the back of his hand. The sleepiness that still clung to him caused him to slouch his head.

Leshak suddenly wondered whether his hand would taste like sleep if he licked it?

“I fell asleep wondering if…..I could go see you,”

“What?”

Leshak finally couldn’t stand it and suddenly grabbed Radan’s hand.

“What were you going to do?”

He felt like his body was on fire.

What did he mean when he said that he was ‘going to see him’ in the middle of the night? Could those words have any other connotation to those who had just become a couple?

No, Leshak thought there could only be one.

“You wanted to come to see me?”

His lips, which stood out exceptionally under the pale moonlight, looked like a ripe peach.

Maybe it was because his head was muddled at the moment, but he thought that if he took a bite, it would be as juicy and sweet as fruit.

“Sir Bereri and Sir Siyed said that His Majesty would be in a bad mood……so I wanted to.”

“… …”

Then that was it.

Leshak sighed without making a sound.

He swore that he wouldn’t be greedy and rush things. There was a situation with his lower body part, it was like he was always riding a wild crazy horse but galloping all alone, however, he wasn’t to the point of falling off. On the battlefield, Leshak has never fallen from a horse. He had an unbeatable equestrian record.

So it wasn’t just that his lower leg was jerking out of control. He could honestly swear to that.

He wanted Radan to realize for himself that when two people are in love, complex and diverse emotions arise, and that among them there are those that can only be settled using one’s body.

“So it’s like that.”

No, he wouldn’t get mad at him for not caring at all about his lower body. He wouldn’t act like such a playboy. That would be treating Radan unfairly.

He was trying his best to wait for him to someday feel the same way as he did.

Leshak rubbed Radan’s lips with his finger as though he were trying to erase his true intentions.

“I wasn’t really offended.”

“But Lord Berheri was right. I…I’ve never given you anything. But I gave Oz a present first……”

Oh, so that’s what he was talking about

The feeling of displeasure that he had forgotten for a moment, soared.

Damn it, that’s right!

That was a little upsetting. He had the right to be angry.

Leshak couldn’t think of a single reason why a person would need a cat’s bell, however, at that moment he coveted it so much. It gave him the feeling of something he’d been wanting all along.

“So I thought I should give you something too.”

Radan’s lips muttered as though he were in trouble.

Watching them made him feel as though he were going crazy again. Leshak would rather have had Radan close his mouth.

No matter how hard he tried to think of something, all Leshak really wanted from him, was for Radan to give him his body. If he didn’t want to do that, then it was fine. It’s not like he wanted to wear a cat’s bell around his neck!

“I’ll give something to you no matter what it is……,”

It was only his body that would do.

Should he beg him to give it to him right now? He wanted to be rewarded for his patience if only a little bit.

“……but no matter how hard I try, I can’t think of anything but this,”

Radan mumbled hesitantly as he swallowed his last words, then he abruptly turned around.

“Radan?”

“Don’t look!”

“Hmm?”

Leshak had no idea what Radan was going to do and he stopped with his hand held out his hand awkwardly.

With his back fully turned, Radan said “Okay,” and then sat up straight.

The back of his neck was flushed red as though he was terribly shy.

“Ra,” said Leshak, who was about to call out to Radan, and then fell silent.

A song flowed into his ears.

It sounded like the cry of a mysterious undiscovered bird.

He had never heard a sound that pure. The naive and innocent sound he was hearing for the first time flowed from his ears to the bottom of his heart.

It was like a tempest that passed in the night while the people slept unawares, and his song was the starlight that covered the roof making the night pass like a dream. The next day the people would only be aware of what had passed by the sparkling water droplets hanging from their windows.

The storm was the sigh of the stars.

Especially on a night when the stars are in turmoil, the people will fall asleep early to avoid the storm that will rage all night. The stars pray that the people won’t wake up, so the storm can turn into fragments of sighs and sprinkle finely onto the ground.

As soon as the morning sun rises, the drops melt away without a trace.

“I’m finished.”

Radan said in a soft voice after finishing the last line as he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.

When Leshak stayed silent, both his cheeks became hot.

“Well then I……I……uh, I’ll go to sleep now.”

Radan buried his head under the sheet in a clumsy manner. His cheeks were so hot the inside of the sheet felt like it was midday.

“No, not yet. Don’t go to sleep.”

Instead of sitting atop the sheet, Leshak slipped under it. Radan covered his blindfolded eyes with the palm of his hands again.

Leshak also felt the heat of his cheeks.

Leshak forcibly removed his hand, instead, he kissed his cheeks and whispered.

“Thank you for that, Radan.”

“…….”

“I’m grateful.”

The storm abated once more.

Leshak closed his eyes and tried to measure Radan’s warmth like he was looking for a star.

It was a night to understand why Kemened’s God was a star.

“……me too.”

After a long time passed, Radan’s mouth opened like a sigh.

The star’s barrier imprisoned them. Regardless of any storm, they were safe with each other.

Please

Leshak prayed to the morning star of Kemened.

May the ninety-nine Bloody Moons pass as soon as possible.

Or come as slow as eternity.

Please.

“Your Majesty, I like you,”

Radan said in a voice resembling a star.

Maybe Al-Riksa was borrowing Radan’s mouth to answer.

“Me too. I like you, Radan.”

Leshak’s voice held Radan.

Radan fell into Leshak’s arms. Leshak felt that the brightest and clearest star in Kemened’s sky had fallen into his arms.

The coronation held at dawn was over.

Kemened’s crown was placed upon Laud’s head, and the high priest gave him the name Alsanu IV.

The First Prince and Regent was the first to kneel before his brother, who had become the new King and swore an oath of allegiance. Alsanu IV now declared that the succession to the throne belonged to the Third Prince.

The whole process was watched over by the young Crown Prince of Ibeden.

The Crown Prince’s secretary transcribed the coronation ceremony into a book. The owner of this book was the Third Prince of Kemened, not the King.

After the coronation ceremony, the morning sun rose.

“It is a long journey. Wear some clothes that are as comfortable and light as possible. The same goes for shoes.”

Radan smiled lightly as he listened to Razil’s request.

These were all things Leshak had already said.

“Yes, eldest brother.”

The clothes and shoes to be worn on the road were all decided according to Leshak’s order.

Surprisingly, it was Sydris who meticulously prepared the items for Radan to wear. After seven years of assisting the Crown Prince as he wandered the battlefields, he developed talents even he didn’t know he had.

Karum was criticized for suggesting that they should take as much flour and sugar as possible. Instead of being intimidated, he worked the cooks of Asilah Palace into making large quantities of candy and chocolate until the day before the coronation.

And the day before the coronation,

Ozdin Gett was released.

The reparations and bounties Leshak ordered to be doubled arrived without missing a sliver of gold.

Decker didn’t even have to board a boat and go all the way to Amboia and back. The merchants belonging to the upper echelon of the Gett that were on the continent prepared gold, jewels, and salt at a dazzling speed and sent them to Asilla Palace.

Incris, the Leshak Army treasurer, found out about this and struck the earth saying that the compensations were too low, but it was too late.

Counting the money was more troublesome than preparing for the coronation. Incris ran between the chests of gold with a cotton cloth wrapped around his torso.

Asilah Palace’s royal guards that were watching him from afar mistook Incris for a merchant belonging to the Gett merchant guild. Incris got angry at the Knight for calling him a merchant, and his colleague gave him candid advice telling him that it was like his calling, he almost punched them for it.

Asilah Palace was hectic and boisterous ahead of the coronation ceremony.

There were also an enormous number of guests who came.

They came not only to congratulate Kemened, who had avoided destruction and had now become a vassal state to Ibeden, but also to look upon Prince Leshak.

In any event, Radan was distracted by the endless gifts and greetings. In the end, Leshak had to step in and limit the audience with him to those who were Royalty or those within the line of succession corresponding to his own.

Radan was at a loss when he suddenly found himself to be an important figure, and he didn’t know what to do in the unfamiliar atmosphere.

Leshak said it was something that he would have to keep getting used to. His position was different now that he had the new title of Third Prince of Kemened and the owner of the Elk Palace, then when no one called him by name.

“It may not be the right metaphor, but if it’s too difficult for you, think of those people who bow their heads to you as cats. They talk in a language you don’t understand, but it’s not something you need to understand. Treat them like you would a cat, if you think it’s cute play with them as you like. If you don’t like the person, ask someone to kick them out.”

Leshak thought it would be an easy-to-understand explanation, but there were some unforeseen consequences.

Radan still felt a closer affinity to animals than people.

As a result, Radan suffered from a difficult situation in which he couldn’t refuse anyone who sought an audience, the day before the coronation Leshak was fed up and ordered the door of the Third Prince’s reception room to be nailed shut.

The coronation ceremony was held amidst such a commotion. On that day, Al-Riksha shone high and bright.

All that was left for Radan to do was to prepare to leave for the Ibeden Empire.

Razil saw Radan off as Laud sat on his throne with shoulders slouched, bent under the weight of the crown.

While nagging, which he knew was useless.

“Time to go.”

“Yes, elder brother.”

Radan groped through the air trying to find Razil’s hand.

At first, Razil was not sure what Radan’s hand gestures meant, he only reached out his hand after Leshak signaled him with a look.

“Here.”

Another signal caught his attention.

He could tell immediately what it meant by looking at his expression.

Don’t squeeze too hard!

Razil left his hand, which was about to hold Radan’s, as it was. Radan lightly touched Razil’s fingers.

“Stay at peace.”

“Alright.”

Hedel, who was quietly cradled in Radan’s arm, opened his mouth and yawned. His white fur glistened in the sun. Razil was resentful of the cheeky cat who never looked sad, but was also pleased inside that he was the picture that matched his youngest brother perfectly.

There was one problem, there was not a bell hanging around Hedel’s neck.

For the youngest brother who sees the world around him through sound, no beast is more challenging than a cat. Cats are tricky animals that humans cannot compare to, so they can move as silently as the air despite having such sharp claws.

“I’ll make a new bell soon and send it to you. so,”

Perhaps it was because the farewells were too long?

Leshak intervened

“Should we stop now and get going, Radan? Everyone is waiting.”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

Radan ended their farewells by bowing to him.

Leshak led Radan by his shoulders before the words ‘Goodbye, and stay at peace’ could be repeated again.

Razil’sI could hear the two of them talking in whispers.

“I’m just saying,”

“Yes?”

“Don’t spend too much time on other people.”

“……what?”

“If you do that, you won’t have any time left for other things. Life in the Imperial Palace is always hectic.”

Although he didn’t seem to fully understand, Radan nodded softly.

“……Alright.”

“Of course, you don’t have to do anything either.”

The carriage doors were open and waiting for Radan to ascend.

Leshak hugged Radan’s waist in front of the carriage steps and sat him on the soft seat. Even to Razil’s eyes, it came off as very natural.

Leshak didn’t have to say anything, but he already knew that it was Radan’s first time getting into a carriage and that he wouldn’t be able to measure the height of the steps.

His sadness disappeared just like that.

His youngest brother and the cat too. They will live happier lives where they fit in much better.

Razil stayed in the same spot for a long time watching as Radan’s imperial carriage pulled away.

After that, there was no further order to make Hedel’s bell in Asilah Palace.

Razil laughed bitterly, saying that such things are now the Ibeden Empire’s responsibility.

And three months later…

On the night of the Bloody Moon, word spread that there was a conferment ceremony at the Imperial Palace of Crateas.

Radan, who became Duke Elkiana named after Elk Palace, appeared in public for the first time, rumors spread to even the very remotest parts of the continent that the young duke with blue eyes, who no one in the world seemed to have ever seen before, was such a beauty.

The red moons would come to rise for a long time in the future.
