“Tsu, tsu-tsu. Come here, is okay.”

Heun stood with his arm stretched out of the window. A small clump of rice was smeared on the tip of his finger. Even though the window was wide open, it was still small. It was a pity that he could not stretch out his arms more. But the little bird tilting his head at a distance could never understand what it was he felt sorry for.

“Come on I won’t hurt you. I want to share my rice with you.”

“What’s wrong? Don’t you need my food? Is there a lot of food out there?”

“……Okay. I understand.”

Even though he said it as though he was resigned, he still did not easily retract his outstretched hand.

He was twenty-five years old this year and has been a prisoner here for twenty years.

There was a small window at the doorway. Other than that, it was just a prison cell. There were a few books that were read to the point of being worn out. The workers who bring food or bath water refuse to make eye contact with him, let alone talk. He will soon become a madman, who may have already gone crazy.

He was a ghost in the eyes of others, or like he didn’t exist. He was a pariah. Even with his feet shackled and unable to move, the workers were still afraid and hurried by.

The bird that flew into the space within view of the tiny window, was the first entertainment in many years.

“I’ll just look…Please don’t leave so soon.”

Heun’s eyes were filled with regret. The bird with white wings and red snout was so docile, that it would have been nice to touch a least once. It looked as though it would not fly away so easily, it was grooming the tips of its wings in the shade. A tiny little smile hung on the lips of the man who watched the bird.

“I’ll give you a name, will you know me next time?”

Then the answer came as the bird flew away…

“No.”

At the sound of his own voice, the smile that had bloomed along his lips disappeared.

Then, the pale-faced man with no vitality was all that remained in this place. The shadow on the floor seems clearer than the living human it belonged to. Heun, the criminal of the Gok family without a surname. His face had not seen the light for a long time. It was like wax, his colorless cheeks seemed bloodless, and his skin was dry. Since he had no comb, the hair that he scoured with his fingers was thin and fragile, resembling his body.

His bulging wrist showed blue veins beneath its pale skin. His skinny ankles were clad in black shackles which looked very heavy and burdensome. There was no expression on his face or in his body, so there seemed to be no emotion either.

For Heun, it was a rarer thing if he wasn’t sick and in pain. Although there were rough-textured scratches covering the skin all around his ankles where the shackles have been, all you could see was a sense of indifference.

A young man’s face suddenly entered the square field of vision through the window. It was Gok Jinsung, his younger brother by two years. His eyes dimmed as he looked at his younger brother. He had become a man perfectly suited to the name that was once his.

“Long time no see, brother. Have you been good all this time?”

Contrary to the pale man, the brother who saw him was filled with emotions that sparkled like freshly washed grains of sand.

“I wanted to see you…..brother!”

“Mungang very beautiful town, as the name suggests the river was spectacular. There are three rivers representing Mungang, one of which is…… Oh, you’re not interested?” Gok Jinsung looked at Heun’s eyes as he sat without expression, he wasn’t sure whether he was listening to what he said or if he was tuning him out. After a frustrating silence passed, a reluctant reply was heard.

“Yes, I’m not interested.”

“……I see. I thought that you would like it if I told you about the places that I’ve been to this time since my brother recently enjoyed reading a book about cultural relics…….”

Gok Jinsung, who was rambling on while making up excuses, paused for a moment and wiped his forehead. He wasn’t sweating but his heart was beating fast.

“Take this. This is wild ginseng I got from Mungang”. Jinsung offered it to him as a gift.

“It’s not necessary. Take it back.”

“Brother!”

Gok Jinsung’s beautiful eyes twinkled. At 23, he looked a few years older than Heun. He was a head taller, not to mention the difference in limb length and physique. Altogether, there were absolutely no similarities between the two siblings.

Although Heun was pale and cold like snow, Gok Jinsung had a body the color of solid copper. As the future leader of the Tohwa Gok clan, he was frequently accompanied by renowned warriors who served as escorts within the empire. However, none of them looked as impressive as Gok Jinsung.

The straight nose under the eyes was as cool as water is smooth, and full lips looked firm and at the same time harboring heartbreaking color. He was very attractive and caught the attention of women everywhere.

No matter where he was he was confident, and always thought of his half-brother Heun. It had been that way since the first time he looked at him. Somehow, it seemed like it should be, and it just happened.

“Brother, please don’t look at me like that. I’ve come a long way. I feared my brother would be alone, and I forgot my fatigue and rushed here to talk. Can’t you see that I’m not even dusted off yet? I missed you so much.”

The answer was the same as always.

“I don’t care.”

“Brother.”

“I hate you. Don’t come here anymore.”

His eyes twitched for no reason. Jinsung let out a small sigh.

“Do I have to say it again? If my brother keeps acting like that, what choice do you give me?”

Heun’s eyes were looking at him now.

This time he let out a sigh of relief. Still, Jinsung didn’t relax his stern expression.

It was difficult for Heun to listen to what he was saying.

“I will remove all the books I’ve given you. No matter how much you beg, I won’t give them back.”

“………”

Heun remained silent but he had a look of inevitability pass over his eyes. There was blue light that blended into his black iris like a snowflake. Every time he saw it Gok’ Jinsung’s heart would melt. His melted heart would flow into every nook and cranny of his body, and each of them seem to be beating violently, not forgetting the habit they had when they were intact. thump thump thump. His heart throbbed.

At the same time, he became hot between his legs. Gok Jinsung slowly reached out his hand, like the breath was leaking out of his lips, and grabbed Heun’s face.

“If you don’t like it, look at me, brother.”

Heun’s eyes narrowed. It was difficult to endure any longer.

Bang! Jinsung kicked the stand that was between them. Cold tea spilled out, staining the floor. A hand pulled at Heun’s clothes.

“Come here.”

Jinsung’s hand suddenly grabbed Heun’s head and pulled him closer. The tip of his nose touched each other. Heun’s breath warmed the bottom of Jinsung’s mouth, whose mouth was dry and twisted.

Gok Jinsung stuck out his tongue and wet his lips. An excruciating thirst spread throughout his body. Even standing still it felt like he was running wildly.

“Are you still trying to resist brother? Isn’t it time you realized it’s of no use now?”

Heun’s black eyes looked down. His dark eyelashes created a shadow on his white skin. With that alone, the fingertips that gripped his chin and twisted it were trembling.

“Do it, and I will increase the number of books.”

Heun didn’t answer. But the more he resisted, the more Jinsung was encouraged. When Heun closed his mouth, Jinsung’s body heated up.

“Open your mouth.”

The voice that was urging Heun to open his lips to swallow his manhood was murky and cracked. Jinsung put strength into his hand as he embraced his brother’s head.

“If you won’t do it, I’ll use another hole.”

“… …”

He refused to open his mouth so Jinsung forced his finger between Heun’s lips. The more he tried to pull away, the more ferocious his grip on him became.

Jinsung forced the head of his penis between Heun’s tightened mouth. The clear liquid that started to flow was applied to Heun’s lips, and his moist lips turned red as if there were rouge applied. The penis that had not yet penetrated his mouth burst through as it revealed its longing for a climax.

“As I said before, if you bite it there will be consequences.”

Gok Jinsung shoved his member into Heun’s mouth. Heun let out a groan. Jinsung tightened his grip on Heun’s jaw, fearing he might pull away. The smell of old sweat, dust, and the condensed odor of a male rushed into Heun’s mouth.

“Ah….”

When Jinsung’s erection finally touched the wet tongue, he let out a soft exclamation.

“Yes. Yes, suck harder. Not so rough, brother. You’ve tasted it many times already. Yes. More so…”

Gok Jinsung smiled with an expression like a frown but twisted. He grabbed the back of Heun’s head and moved it back and forth roughly. If he moved too roughly Heun’s teeth would sometimes scratch his penis. The exhilarating pain was nothing in comparison to the sheer unadulterated pleasure that was created. He occasionally liked that a bit, especially when he was reaching a peak because it added more excitement and stimulation.

Jinsung felt Heun’s warm damp mouth was made for his manhood. His tightly clamped mouth, and the strained twisted expression as he forced in penis inside his mouth, all excited Jinsung immeasurably.

A bright burning sense of humiliation permeated every breath Heun took. Every time Jinsung’s rigid penis stabbed the inside of his throat, tears of anger pooled up and dropped from his eyes. He looked like he was going crazy.

Gok Jinsung remembered the moment he saw Heun for the first time. Heun was sixteen, and Jinsung was fourteen years old. It was a time before Heun was made to wear shackles. That day he was passing by a corner of the outer garden where he normally didn’t walk. As he passed by, he happened to see Heun basking in the sun in a garden in front of a shabby pavilion.

‘Who is the person, he asked the escort. The escort answered with a perplexed look, “he is someone you don’t need to know about”. Jinsung Gok became frustrated and walked directly in front of Heun. Before him, was a person who looked like he was likely to melt away in the sun at any moment. He was struck dumb.

“Who are you?”

He asked stuttering his words, which was so uncharacteristic of Jinsung.

“I’m no one”.

Heun replied as he immediately looked away. His blue eyes flashed in the sunshine. At that moment, Gok Jinsung understood what he was. Heun was not likely to disappear, but he was also something ephemeral. Like some far-away place at the top of a snowy mountain, on the surface of a lake of ice that never melts. A place where beautiful things deserved to be beautiful. A worldly place where the sun was shining, was not suitable for him.

Gok Jinsung looked at Heun’s white hands. In the next moment, he was concerned about the hand that seemed to have been made for his eyes. Gok Jinsung reached out his hand carefully and touched Heun’s hand.

“If the sun is so strong, won’t you get burned?”

Heun pulled his hand away. That was his answer…without any emotion.

“…… It’s not a matter for the master to worry about”

Was it because his hand was like flowing water? The ugliness rose! Gok Jinsung wanted to hold his hand again! It was the moment when the 14-year-old boy first put another in his heart. He returned to the inner garden and asked the owner, what was the crime of the man imprisoned in the north of the outer garden, and when could he be released.

Instead of answering this, the owner put shackles on Heun’s feet and made sure that he could never come out of the shine again. At that time, the escort serving Gok Jinsung had one of his hands cut off because he neglected his duties. Fourteen years old. That’s how the relationship first started.

It was a mixture of anxiety, longing for the ephemeral blue-eyed boy, self-blame, and helplessness toward him. It didn’t take long for all of that to turn into lust. The boy grew up quickly. It was several times faster than his half-brother, whom he didn’t even know existed until he turned 14. The boy’s heart had already gone to a place his half-brother could never follow.

The boy was alone there, waiting for his half-brother. No, he couldn’t wait. The lust that grew up alone, became a wild beast, and one day when the boy couldn’t bear it any longer and closed his eyes, the beast was released.

Gok Jinsung’s hand, which had been pulling Heun’s head, loosened. A fresh burst of pleasure was exclaimed from Jinsung’s lips.

“Ugh… … Brother, that feels so good!”

“Do you know much I hate to leave my brother and travel around the country taking care of the family’s affairs? I want to be by your side every day. Even when I went to Mungang I remembered my brother…… I thought endlessly about this filthy tight mouth, and this wet tongue, I couldn’t sleep at night thinking about it.”

” …….”

“But if you are patient, there will be some good points. If one day I become the head of the family, I will release my brother from this shine. Then the two of us will be able to travel around the country holding hands together. I’ve been to a lot of places, so I’ll be able to show you places that you’ll like. How happy I would be to see my brother rejoice like a child. Isn’t that right, brother?”

“… …”

His eyebrows twitched in response. It was an eyebrow that had never been kindly bent towards his brother. Gok Jinsung reached out and rubbed Heun’s brow.

“But if I don’t push him to have me, he will never recognize my heart first.”

Gok Jinsung left a mark on Heun’s forehead, and his smile twisted as he looked at the marks he had made.

“So there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Sometimes he had thoughts that if Heun had given himself freely to him at least once before he forced him, he never would have had to go this far.

Finally, Gok Jinsung finished and ejaculated with a hard push down his throat. White foam flowed through the gap between his penis and Heun’s lips.

Feeling disappointed with the lack of eroticism at having to force Heun to perform fellatio, he decided to gain satisfaction another way. Gok Jinsung commanded him.

“Swallow it, brother. Keep it clean, and even eat what is next to it.”

Jinsung wiped the semen that was dripping down Heun’s chin with his thumb and rubbed it on his lips. As always, Heun had a disgusted face. Heun would never stick out his tongue and lick it unless Jinsung forced him. So, from time to time, Jinsung had the desire to pry open his mouth and shove his penis in forcefully.

He often asked himself when would Heun finally accept him? He wanted Heun to want him as much as he wanted Heun. He thought it would be nice to stop all this ugliness, but Gok Jinsung was fed up with Heun’s stubborn persistence that never gave in. Gok Jinsung lifted his hand from Heun’s lips.

“I also picked up a few books from Mungang. Even though it was a lot in my luggage, I made sure to pack it up because it is the Gaze of Heaven, and my brother seemed to like it. Would you like to look through it if I leave it?”

He wished that Heun would accept the relationship he offered, not just the book. But only then, when he gave him the book, did Heun nod to him as he wiped off his chin.

“I will look at it.”

“…….”

Beautiful things should be beautiful where they can be. But often, Gok Jinsung felt an unbearable urge to ruin that beautiful thing.

Huen remembered that night in autumn when his brother had just turned seventeen. There was plenty of water that day. The opportunity to wipe his entire body was rare, so he sat in the tub of water for quite some time, which caused a huge problem.

The wounds on his ankles were soaked in water. The skin that had been rubbed raw by the shackles could not be separated, and it swelled up like rotten meat. Even in the dark, the eyes of the servant woman who saw the wounds were darkened, as though she couldn’t stand the sight. Unfortunately, his brother was out by the command of the head of the family. So even if it’s bad, it may take a month for him to see him. He just hoped that the wound would heal in the meantime.

Heun smiled bitterly at the thought that his brother would take care of his body. If he had known, he would have prayed that his brother wouldn’t notice him anymore.

When his brother was seventeen, Heun was aware that his brother’s eyes looking at him had gradually changed. The affectionate brother sometimes gave dark looks that sent shivers down his spine.

Unfortunately, he knew what that meant.

It meant that his brother wanted him in an unacceptable way. What could he do, he was helpless…… Heun closed his eyes at the memory of his brother. No, he reverted to his previous life as he remembered……

❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄

Gok Yeo-Heun had two older brothers. Among them, the eldest son of the Gok family, who inherited the name Gok Jinsung, was four years older than Gok Yeo-Heun. From the moment Yeo-Heun was born, his brother was very devoted to him. His brother was so sweet to him and was the nicest person.

However, when Gok Yeo-Heun turned 14, the day came when he could not hide his genius and the older brother suddenly changed. There was no more stroking of his hair, no more riding his horse, he stopped making eye contact.

Gok Yeo-Heun thought that it was because he overshadowed his older brother and made him feel small. It became a corrosive worm and it tormented him all the time.

-Brother.

One winter night, when it snowed a lot, Gok Yeo-Heun visited Gok Jinsung.

“Why are you looking for me? Don’t come in here!”

The words cut him like a knife. Tears welled up in Jinsung’s eyes, but his voice was cold.

“I will wait for you to open the door”.

“Why are you so stubborn”?

 -Brother.

“…… I want to see you”.

Snow was piled up upon his shoulders. His breath was as white as the moonlight as he stood in front of the closed door.

Time went by. When the fingertips knocking on the door turned blue, Gok Jinsung finally opened the door.

“Why are you doing this?”

It didn’t matter what the harsh expression he had, Yeo-Heun was just so happy to see his brother that he cried. Gok Yeo-Heun opened his arms and embraced Gok Jinsung. He wanted it to be like it was when he was a child.

“Brother, don’t hate me. I don’t care about the position of Gaju. I just want to be friendly with my brother….”.

Instead of answering, Gok Jinsung closed the door and fastened the latch. Until then, Gok Yeo-Heun didn’t know what that meant.

He was frozen through, and when Jinsung started taking his clothes off of him, he believed he was just trying to be kind.

“I don’t hate you. I just…….”

“….. yes, brother? What did you say?”

A drop of water fell on his frozen thighs. Gok Jinsung wiped it with his hands. The hand that touched his skin was very hot. It was then that he saw that the eyes of Gok Jinsung were very dark.

Yeo-Heun realized that the eyes of Jinsung, which he thought were dark, were actually wet.

“……I like you too much,…….”

So the night began. All night long, his legs were forced to spread open and his back entrance was torn apart, but there wasn’t a sound to be heard. Drops of blood flowed from Jinsung’s bitten lips the whole time he was assaulting his brother. Yeo-Heun let his mind drift to another place during the rape.

The dawn was bright thanks to the snow that had piled up last night. The silent incest between the two brothers did not hide anything. The wounds that the younger brother suffered, the selfishness that the older brother must have been suppressing, and the false affection that had been scorched and manifested in that horrible act, were revealed on the spot. Even after that night, Gok Yeo-Heun struggled to let go of his compassion for Gok Jinsung.

The avoidance of each other was also the same. It was painful to see each other, and they reproached themselves as if they were dying of each other’s wounds.

❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄

“Again……”

The Heun let out a long sigh like a wound. Should karma be repeated? He had tried to avoid him in this life, to avoid repeating the previous life. But just as the feelings of his previous life could not easily be let go of, he too could not completely separate himself from his brother.

“Brother.”

One day while he was struggling in his thoughts, he heard his brother calling to him. Heun closed his eyes. He held his breath and pretended not to hear.

The more he let his heart influence him the harder it was to get away from what it would inevitability lead to. He was afraid that he would bring about a repeat of the previous life by showing any attention or affection in this one.

“Brother. I’m coming in.”

The younger brother was whispering quietly as he came in like the night breeze and loosened the thick bar of the door.

As he grew older he was able to get away from the escorts and he came to visit Heun alone. It was surprising that no one had ever found out about it. If the escorts should find out about these visits, this time it won’t end with just shackling.

At seventeen his brother no longer suited the term boy. He came to the bedside and took a seat.

“I was afraid I might wake you up brother, but I couldn’t help but come. I found an ointment that is good for your wound when I was out today, I wanted to give it to my brother right away.”

Heun knew at that time that things were not as simple as his brother’s words. After all, it happened on a day just like today.

“Brother, are you sleeping well?”

He took the ointment that his brother had put in his hand. The smell of oil and mugwort stung his nostrils. After hesitating for a while, the brother gently walked over the blanket and tried to apply salve to his ankles.

“Brother.”

He thought he heard his brother’s voice trembling, and then water suddenly dripped onto his ankle.

“Brother……”

Jinsung was crying. What touched the wound was not bitter saltwater, but more painful emotion.

“Stop. Don’t touch it.”

Eventually, Heun had to open his eyes. The younger brother, who made eye contact with the suddenly rising Heun still had tears in his eyes, but then his expression stiffened.

“…… you were not sleeping?”

“You woke me up.”

The younger brother did not believe Heun’s words. The hand holding the expensive medicine was shaking as if it were a part of his heart.

“You’re pretending now…… I was going to touch your body, so you’re just pretending now?”

“Leave now. If other people see you are here at this hour…… ”

“What do other people mean?”

The older brother had the face of an already wounded animal. Heun knew that today would be that day.

His brother will assault him, and become a man with the heart of a beast, just like his former brother who had the name of Gok Jinsung. He felt a chill in his body. Looking down at Heun’s shoulders, who had begun to tremble spontaneously, the older brother asked.

“Do you hate me, brother?”

It was wrong to hate him. Heun had been living in captivity this whole time. It was a life of loneliness for days on end. It was a life so lonely that a bird flying into his window was his greatest pleasure, but even that flew away.

His brother was the only one who saw him in this miserable life which was all but a perpetual prison. The emotions that he recalled for his younger brother were like those of the friendship and compassion which he longed for from him in his previous life. The affection that his brother gave him could not be weighed regardless of the form. If there is only one piece, if there is something precious to him, it would be the friendship of his brother that has been accumulated over the years.

So he had to be cold somehow. He had to cut out this cancer before it grew into an unmanageable size. Maybe it wasn’t too late, he couldn’t tell if it was useless from the start. However, it was already too late!

“Yes.”

“…… what was that?”

His brother murmured low as if talking to himself.

“Do you not like me? Do you hate me?”

“Yes. I hate you, so you should hate me too……,”

His brother raised his eyes. Both eyes lost their original color and glowed white in the oblique moonlight.

“But what about it, brother?”

Jinsung grabbed Heun’s swollen ankle. He couldn’t even scream. The pain that started in his ankles ran through his back and spread to his brain.

“Hey, stop this…….”

Jinsung stared piercingly at Heun as he trembled. His lips slowly opened up. He stuck out his tongue and licked his lips. It was like a starving man drooling over the food in front of him.

“I like my brother so much. I can’t help myself, I love you so…… so much.”

He tried to get away desperately but to no avail. Then his clothes were torn off him. Seeing his brother staring at his nakedness with ferocious eyes, he ground his teeth. He resisted until his trembling limb broke but to no avail. It was a pitiful night. His brother raped him until morning and had to apply the ointment he brought to his punctured hole instead of to his ankle. His hands trembled as he repaired the broken bones and ripped seams of his clothes.

It was like that day in his previous life when the dawn was so bright that he wanted to go blind. Gok Jinsung captured the image of Heun in his eyes. Heun’s eyes reflected it back to him so that he was forced to face every single image of himself reflected in those eyes. The torn and trampled man was all he could see. He felt he was truly going mad.

“Now that you’ve let go of your lust, don’t look for me again.”

After saying that, he closed his eyes. Even with his closed eyes, his brother’s tenacious gaze followed.

“Would you mind looking at me, even for the one book I’m giving you?”

Books were actually a funny excuse.

It was a sin on Heun’s part to tolerate his brother’s visits under the pretext of a book, he didn’t know if really wanted to read a book or if he just missed his brother. That was all it was, but the price was so severe.

“…… Better to be blind.”

“……..”

Warm water dripped from his brother’s eyes and fell on his ankles. Jinsung, whose love had turned to salt was the most painful of all his wounds. It was not the first time he had been through it, but it was even more painful now.

-Please don’t like me. Please.

The younger brother continued to wet his ankles with tears until morning came, and then he went back. And from then on, whenever he had free time, he looked for him. The karma of a previous life which had made Heun be reborn, and the scars it formed were so deep that it was impossible to move or change them with only his own strength alone.

  1. I am glad I found such a resourse to read these novels.
I’ve just started Bardo Palace. Can you please help me to understand. It is said that Heun was 16 and Jinsung was 14. And later it was said that Jinsung was the elder brother. May be my english is not that great, but can you please help me.
Here I quote: “Gok Yeo-Heun had two older brothers. Among them, the eldest son of the Gok family, who inherited the name Gok Jinsung, was 4 years older than Gok Yeo-Heun”.

    1. I appreciate you taking the time to ask this. I had to go back to check and make sure the translation was correct. I did volume one 2-years ago and I made a lot of mistakes. If you notice any of them please let me know so I can fix them 🙂

You are not wrong, however, this story follows two time lines/incarnations.

The first life: Gok Yeo-Heun age 14, was the YOUNGER brother of Gok Jinsung age 18
      100 years later,
The second life: the reincarnated Gok Heun age 16, is the OLDER brother or the reincarnated Gok Jinsung age 14, when the meet for the first time.

I have tried 🙂 to put the earlier incarnation between 2 line of emojis (usually flowers🌸, snowflakes❄, or birds🕊 ) and/or in colored paragraphs.

      I hope this helps 🙂
