Volume 3 – Chain Reaction

1

The commotion coming from outside caused uncertainty and misgivings from those inside the quiet interior.

“What is that noise?”

The Knight guarding the Crown Prince’s bedroom turned his attention to the window on the other side of the hallway. Only one of Leshak’s twelve elite Guardian Knights, stayed behind to protect Radan.

If you say ‘only‘ one person, it sounds like a minimal number, but in fact, it was not. Leshak’s Guardian Knights were definitely people who did their part regardless of where they were stationed.

There were guards placed at every entrance on the third floor where the personal chambers were located, but only the Guardian Knights were chosen to guard the actual bed chambers.

It was in case Ozdin Gett, who hadn’t been caught yet, returned.

Bam Bam~

Glen knocked on the bed chamber’s door.

“Yes.”

Radan replied.

When Glenn spoke to Radan he referred to him in an ambiguous way. He couldn’t treat the Prince of the fallen enemy country as though he were royalty, nor could he use words that referred to the person occupying First Prince Leshak’s bedroom as though he were a mere hostage.

Glenn hoped that Leshak would clear up this ambiguous relationship between them at some point so that he and his subordinates wouldn’t continue to be put into an unnecessarily complicated situation.

“It’s getting noisy outside. Is everything alright in there with you?”

“Yes, everything is fine. However, if there is a disturbance……”

“His Majesty has gone there so there’s nothing to worry about. Just stay where you are.”

“Alright…….”

His hesitant answer was burdened with anxiety.

Just the name Ozdin Gett aroused particular emotions in all of those who remembered what had happened in Attica, in the Guardian Knight’s case, they were sick of hearing it, in Radan they also aroused particular emotions as well.

He knew how obstinate and reckless Ozdin was. He was a person who bought a ring and put it on him without any hesitation, declaring that he was his destined mate.

He was not shaken even when he was told that Radan was the Unknown Assassin. On the contrary, he became angry, saying that he was not the kind of man who would judge him on his past.

Ozdin probably thinks he needs to save Radan, so it wouldn’t be strange that he would sneak into Cythern.

Radan was sincere when he told Ozdin that he just wanted him to be safe. Radan prayed that Ozdin would leave Cythern without any incident. Like the many others who had died because of him, Ozdin Gett would remain his sin.

“You mustn’t come out until I tell you to,”

Glenn told him once again, as he thought about the structure of the bedroom, with its tightly secured windows and doors.

He didn’t know what Ozdin Gett was up to here in Cythern, but he would have to go through a lot to get to Radan.

But it was just then,

Boom!~

A noise echoed through the entire castle’s walls.

“This is madness…..what is happening?”

There was a day that Glenn heard a sound that was similar to this one, and it was the sound of Amboia’s mobile catapult.

Five enemies came together rushing toward one common goal, Cythern! With Ozdin Gett’s unlimited funds and Decker’s skills, who was once called the Mercenary King of the continent, the situation had grown to such a great extent.

The final battle of the Seven Years’ War, which would have been recorded in the continental war history as the ‘Battle of the Aryan Plains’ had Radan not been found in the city of Attica, was about to begin at Cythern.

Glenn shouted into the room in a hurry.

“Don’t come out!”

Then he ran to the end of the corridor to ask the soldiers about the situation outside.

“Is anyone there?!”

Once again,

Boom!~

This time there was an explosion.

It came from inside.

Glenn drew his sword and abruptly shouted.

“What’s going on? Is everyone all right!?”

There was no answer.

Instead, thick acrid smoke rose up from the end of the grand staircase that led to the third floor. The dense ashy smoke obscured his vision.

He had never seen anything like it. It couldn’t have been a fire considering that there was no heat. It was surprising that so much smoke could rise in an instant in the absence of fire.

Glenn covered his mouth and nose with the back of his hand and approached cautiously.

Shiing!~

A blade suddenly burst through from out of the smoke.

“Uh!”

It was a sudden attack, but just like any of the other twelve Guardian Knights, Glenn swiftly blocked his opponent’s sword.

Glenn held his sword in place over his shoulder in order to keep the opponent’s blade from touching his body and then turned halfway around to face his opponent.

It was a face he had seen once before.

Although at the time the face was pretending to be afflicted with gimmal disease, so it looked odd.

“That’s better than expected.”

Said Ozdin Gett with a nod.

“Are you the madman heir of the Gett?”

“I’m a man madly in love¹. I’ve come to take back my betrothed that was stolen by Leshak Caliph.”

Glenn burst into laughter. However, it was hard to laugh because smoke kept getting into his eyes.

“Don’t come in here and announce yourself while speaking about love! You’re the one here who’s intruding into other people’s love! You’re the one who needs to leave this place!”

Glenn raised his sword and swung at Ozdin. Ozdin avoided Glenn’s sword with a quick step backward.

Amboia’s sword style was different from Ibeden’s style of swordsmanship. Instead of focusing entirely on stabbing and slicing, they used a method of swordsmanship in which they added irregular movements to be more unpredictable.

His swift steps were a skill that Glenn had never experienced before.

But that was all. Glen wasn’t at all concerned about the Amboian style of swordsmanship. There was no way that the heir of the Gett had the skills to face off with one of the twelve elite Guardian Knights one-on-one.

“Did you use your sword to take out the guards?”

“Not exactly. Half were lured away and the other half was knocked unconscious. There are many things in Amboia that you wouldn’t even dream of in a backwater country like Ibeden.”

Glenn gritted his teeth.

“Yeah, so what? Are your sword skills so amazing that even one of lbeden’s Guardian Knights couldn’t even dream of it?”

“Well, who knows?”

At this point, Glenn thought it wasn’t worth it to laugh. Instead, he adjusted his sword straight-faced.

“Alright, let’s see what this madman’s sword can do?”

Whiing, Chang!~

Glenn slashed his sword forward with all his might. Ozdin didn’t even think about trading blows this time, instead, he stepped backward.

“Come at me properly. If you keep this up, you won’t be able to touch His Majesty’s bedroom door before you die by my hand.”

Chang!~

The tip of Glenn’s sword narrowly whizzed passed Ozdin’s shoulder. Ozdin countered quickly by turning around and moving out of Glenn’s arm’s reach.

“Some things Amboians use require time.”

“Is that smoke a sleeping agent?”

“Well, yes it is. But as it can be seen, it doesn’t seem to work on a Guardian Knight.”

“It seems that the Amboians cannot have a single thought unless it includes some form of underhandedness.”

“So, I prepared something else as well.”

“What?”

Kang!

Glenn suddenly changed the direction of the blade from below, aiming it at Ozdin’s chin. Ozdin thought that it was too late to avoid his sword so he reluctantly took it on.

Kagang!~

Ozdin’s blade was pushed back by the force and was chipped.

“What did you do to get ready to square off?”

Glenn grinned and pushed the sword that was pressed against Ozdin’s blade.

“Uh,”

Ozdin was stabbed in his jaw. The tip of Glenn’s sword pierced through his skin causing it to bleed. If the sword had pierced him one more knuckle deeper Ozdin wouldn’t have survived it.

And then,

“Kack! Kiik!”

Glenn heard a cry from a beast which distracted him.

A fast, small, cheeky monkey, who pissed people off as easily as his master, was shaking the chandelier on the ceiling.

“Don’t worry. I’ll send that damned thing off with you too.”

Glenn glared at Zorg with irritation

“Kiik!”

Zorg threw something at Glenn, as though he understood what he was saying. It was a blue bottle filled with a cloudy liquid.

Smash!~

The blue bottle hit the floor and shattered.

And just like before, a cloud of thick smoke billowed up. The thick smoke instantly obscured Ozdin’s figure and it made it so Glenn was unable to open his eyes.

“Damn it!”

Shouted Glenn with his eyes tightly closed. His eyes were stinging unbearably. He couldn’t do anything through the tears as his eyes and nose poured uncontrollably.

“It’s called a ‘Black Diamond’. As a backwater Knight, there’s no way you know what that is.”

Smack!~

Following Ozdin Gett’s words, Glenn’s received a heavy blow on the back of his head.

After being struck in a critical spot, Glenn collapsed, passing out unconscious.

Ozdin, who had been prepared by covering his face with his sleeve before Zorg threw the black-diamond, walked out of the smoke.

“Well done, Zorg .”

“Kiik, Kiik.”

Pow, boom!~

From the other side of the stairs, the sound of the black-diamonds breaking in succession could be heard.

After a while, Vendel, whose eyes were dripping with tears with a disgusted expression on his face, and Hadir, the stoic prophet, appeared from beyond the smoke.

“We’re running out f time.”

Said Hadir spoke to Ozdin suddenly.

“Hurry and open the door.”

“Yes.”

Ozdin thrust his blade through the crack in the door. As he raised his sword upward from the bottom of the door toward the top, the blade caught the latch. Ozdin held lifted the word with all his might.

Clink!~

The bolt fell off. Ozdin pushed his shoulder against the door and it opened.

“Radan!”

“ah……. ”

The black-haired boy sitting by the window turned his head their way.

His eyes like crystal blue water could be seen. Ozdin felt as if his breath had been taken away.

“Ra……dan?”

He thought that his eyes must have been blue.

He had no doubts that they would be as beautiful as jewels.

However, the actual sight of Radan with his eyes open instantly blew away all his previous imaginings.

He was more beautiful than anything Ozdin had ever seen. No matter what he did he would never cast aside that image.

“O,Oz,”

Radan faltered and moved his body backward.

“Radan.”

Ozdin moved towards Radan, however, Vendel moved ahead of him.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Radan.”

“……What?”

As Radan is occupied by the embarrassment he felt at Vendal’s limitless apologies,

Pow!-

Vendel struck Radan in the stomach. Just as he was instructed to do by Decker, in order to stun Ozdin on the day when he was running wild.

“… …”

Radan’s body dropped.

“What are you doing?!”

Hadir stopped Ozdin’s screaming.

“We don’t have time!”

Vendel grabbed Radan’s wrist and put him onto Ozdin’s shoulders.

“I must inform you that this is what the Prophet Hadir has ordered. Don’t say anything to me, My Lord.”

“……Don’t make me laugh! We’ll talk about this later.”

“Yes, yes. But for now, if we can kindly survive the hands of the Crown Prince of Ibeden, who will run wild like a madman.”

Hadir pounded the floor with his cane, making a noise.

“Come this way,”

Ozdin and Vendel shut their bickering and followed behind Hadir.

The gates opened.

It was an inside job. It was only belatedly realized that the workers at Alton Company were, in fact, mercenaries in disguise and that they had left the warehouse and opened the door on their own, however, the chaos was already out of control.

Fighting had broken out everywhere.

Once the enemies crossed the gate, there was no other way. Leshak’s army lost its numerical superiority and had to give up its advantage over the territory. The walls of the castle collapsed all around, and death pushed in from all sides.

They could only rely on their two arms and swords. They couldn’t cover all of the disjointed terrains, as the boundary between the enemy and the allies became blurred.

This type of battle could only continue until one side or the other was annihilated.

“Damn it. Give me a sword as well!”

Sidris saw Incris’s hand stretching towards him.

It was ridiculous.

“You’re Crazy.”

Sidris cursed, which was out of his character. However, Incris had a cotton cloth wrapped around his gut.

“Give it to me.”

Sidris slapped the wounded man’s hand coldly.

“His Majesty saved your life at great cost so guard it well. Acting as though your fine is all bullshit.”

“Damn it! That’s right! It’s thanks to His Majesty for helping me get out of peril that my life has been spared. I’m fine now! So that means that I can take action!”

Sidris was eventually able to retrieve Incris from the hands of the mercenaries who were fleeing.

Although Incris was hit by an arrow and looked to be a dead man, he was still alive.

From the beginning, there was no way that Leshak would kill Incris while in his right mind. Even though he had made the foolhardy mistake of being taken, hostage.

To Leshak’s credit, he was able to shoot his arrow avoiding all of Incris’s organs and vital points and piercing a place where that was nonlife-threatening in the slightest.

Incris understood the inferred meaning when Leshak said ‘You must die’, and he collapsed without a word and played dead. Sidris, who was already privy to Leshak’s plan, then went out without a moment to lose and saved Incris, however, the plan was disrupted when the mercenaries grabbed Incris and took off with his body.

It was only after Sidris belatedly returned to rejoin the battle, that he realized why things went so wrong.

The enemy had no intention of taking a hostage from the beginning. Their intention had always been to distract Leshak and cause confusion.

Everyone seemed to be playing their part splendidly.

Sidris looked at Incris with a withering, pathetic gaze.

“Don’t you know that this situation is all because of you? If you hadn’t been taken hostage like an idiot, the gates wouldn’t have been opened like that. You’re like that,  always an idiot!”

“Yes, I am a fool. So now I’m trying to make up for it. Give me the sword!”

“Shut up!”

Sidris was tired of reasoning with him, so he punched Incris’s bandage with his fist.

“Ahh! Ugh, you!”

Incris screamed. Then, with all his strength, he pointed at Sidris, but Sidris didn’t bat an eyelash.

“Take him away and tie him up. Tie it up in front of His Majesty’s bedroom if you have to. Don’t play around with him. Glenn will be there if you do, so tell him never to take his eyes off this guy.”

“All right.”

Incris struggled to grab hold of Sidris.

“You bastard! Don’t treat me like a piece of luggage!”

“It serves you right, lowly bastard.”

Sidris, who calmly shook off Incris, moved forward towards the arduous task ahead.

It seemed as though it would be a very long battle.

And after a bit,

“……Glenn? Damn, this….. !”

Incris found Glenn lying on the floor unconscious. Most of the guards who had been stationed at the entrance to the third floor were also unconscious.

The soldier who had helped Incris up to this point checked the bedroom where the latch had fallen off.

The bedroom is empty!”

“That son of a bitch!”

Ozdin Gett, the man who had cursed the whole world, had abducted Radan and disappeared.

A dark shadow fell across Incris’s face.

“We have to find him!”

Radan had to be brought back before Leshak knew.

Before Leshak began to act like a person whose heart had been cut from his body, just like that last time.
