Volume 3 – Conclusion

1

“Damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it!”

The sky was murky with the light of the breaking dawn.

He didn’t even know how the night had passed. It was just like walking through a nightmare.

As he looked back at the path he had just been down, Laud de La Ranadia cursed the dawn.

As the blood-red darkness of the bloody moon disappeared, the dawn shone on reality.

A reality where he couldn’t find even a single surviving ally, where there was only silence without an answer, and where the sound of enemy footsteps grew louder and louder.

And the reality of the defeat he knew he had already experienced once and had promised that he would never suffer again, was unfolding before his eyes.

“Shiiiiit!”

Laud screamed.

The flag of Kemened’s royal family, which he had been holding until the end, fell at his feet. The flag on the ground was soon stained with the blood of his allies.

Yesterday was his last chance.

Asilah Palace fell and Laud lost his place in return. He managed to survive by moving around from castle to castle of the Nobility like a vagabond. But Laud knew. Those who spoke politely and pretended to bow their heads low had in fact already made their oath of allegiance and thrown Asilah Palace into hell.

Only a few were willing to join Laud in his revenge. It didn’t work. It was only Archduke Flambard who gave him the assistance he really needed.

The Principality of Flambard was also trampled on by Caliph Leshak, just like Asilah Palace. The difference between the two was that the Archduke of Flambard begged for his life more shrewdly.

Thanks to that, the Principality of Flambard was safe. For some unknown reason, Leshak’s army cast aside the declaration of surrender that it had received and withdrew from the front, giving them time to reorganize their lines.

No matter how he thought about it, there was only one answer. That was to make the enemies of Ibeden, scattered here and there, into allies.

There, suddenly, the Gett scion stepped forward. The Gett was from a place where you could get unlimited funds and strange, new-style weapons, that were not found on the continent.

The Archduke of Flambard tore up the document of surrender he had sealed with his own hand and declared war against the Empire once again. However, it was never told to Leshak Caliph that war had been declared, but, on the other hand, Laud had no reason to refuse to join hands with him, so one could say it was a shrewd move on his part.

Laud gathered all the troops he could borrow in the name of Ranadia and came to Cythern.

Then, yesterday,

The final battle began under the Bloody Moon.

Then, today,

The battle is over.

It was long and intense, but the outcome was decided.

Laud had to go back to that damn tiresome escapade again. He hated it more than death, however, even that was only possible if he safely escaped from this place.

“Well, where……”

He looked around.

He should have just run away long ago. He sowed the seeds of his own misfortune by remaining optimistic and putting his faith in numbers in the face of such a terrible battle, where one couldn’t distinguish friends from foes.

Even after facing off against Leshak, he believed that this time would be different. Why was he so stupid?

Laud took off his helmet.

He threw away the heavy sword and he also threw away his shield.

He wished that he could escape from here, even if it was naked.

“M,my Lord. Take me with you too, I also….”

Someone grabbed his ankle.

Laud lowered his head. The one begging him had his leg cut off, and an arrow stuck in his eye.

The debased man calling out to him seemed to be a nobleman of Kemened.

In Laud’s eyes, he was a worthless corpse.

“Let go.”

Laud vigorously shook off the hand that was holding him.

“M,Majesty……”

Laud covered his ears and ran.

He had to run away before Leshak’s forces blocked his way.

He ran aimlessly along the wall. Those who survived joined in one by one.

Laud continued running, pushing aside those who got in his way. There will be a gate at the end.

“There it is…… !”

He finally found the castle gate.

Then,

Heeey,

The drawbridge behind the castle gate was closing.

“Oh, no!”

Laud groaned and tried to give momentum to his feet. But no matter how hard he tried to run, his body wouldn’t obey.

He slumped and sat down with a groan.

“Ugh, Aaaaaa!”

Tears poured from both of his eyes.

Laud was devastated¹.

He heard footsteps running toward him, but he couldn’t lift a finger.

“The second Prince of Kemened, isn’t that right, Your Highness?”

Siddris checked Laud’s face.

Then Laud noticed a deep shadow cast over his body.

Leshak was standing in front of him with the dawn at his back.

“……Yes.”

Leshak’s words flowed out slowly in a long breath.

The simple word ‘yes‘ actually had a complicated and heavy meaning.

“A,Ahh…”

Laud trembled, not knowing why. His jaws clattered with a crackling sound.

The reality of facing Leshak Caliph without even a sword, empty-handed, froze his body stiff.

The way those black eyes looked at him was painful.

Those eyes seemed to say that he was the meanest and most terrible being in the world.

Leshak slowly clenched his fist.

Laud did not know what he was enduring.

He didn’t know what was to come. It was so scary that he thought he’d rather just die.

“…… drag him and go. Put him in the dungeon.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

Leshak turned around.

The soldiers grabbed Laud by the shoulders. At that moment, he came to his senses.

“W,why!?”

His anger erupted belatedly.

All of this was unfair. In the name of the great Al Riksha, Leshak Caliph should have died long ago.

The monster from the Kemened Royal Family, the cursed thing, would never have had a reason to be born except to kill Leshak Caliph.

That was why Al Riksha gave birth to the monster, and why he ordered the war to begin.

“Why didn’t you die?! The monster that can kill anything in the world……!? Why didn’t you kill me!? Why?!”

Laud struggled and shouted at Leshak.

“Why? Why?”

“Is that what you’re curious about?”

Leshak turned around.

As soon as he saw his shoulders move, the distance closed in an instant.

The next moment,

Leshak grabbed Laud by the neck and raised him up so that both his feet were off the ground.

Blood pooled in his neck and in his head. Laud flailed with both hands as his face turned bright red. Saliva and foam flew out of his mouth.

“No, no…… haagh,”

“I’m curious about that, too.”

There were no changes in his black gaze.

His eyes were like looking at the meanest, and most terrible being in the world.

However, Leshak’s hand continued to squeeze harder as Laud’s veins continued to bulge out. The more he did, the more Loud’s face reddened. It felt like his eyeballs would pop out.

“Why didn’t I kill you?”

“Kaa…… k!”

“How could I not kill you? How could I..….,”

“Keuuu,”

His eyes went dark.

Yellow liquid flowed down from between his legs as they swayed helplessly.

Loud prayed as best he could.

“H,hel………lp,

His tongue floundered on its own. What came out of Laud’s mouth could no longer be discerned as human words.

“el……p ,”

His eyes rolled back in his head revealing the whites of his eyes.

Thud!-

Leshak let go of Laud. Laud fell down in his own urine and trembled.

“……How could he have never hated you? To live such a life.”

Leshak’s shoulders shook.

After exerting himself he had small spasms in his hand, but Leshak ignored them.

This will be a small gift for Radan. He wanted to leave Laud’s disposal up to Radan.

“People like you will not wake up even if it costs you your life. You still can’t understand the heart that called you brother. Be grateful for the undeserved affection you have received.”

It was something Laud still couldn’t understand.

“Because I’m going crazy because of that too.”

An angry gaze now replaced the next words.

To the point where he wanted to tear away from the person who he received it from.

“Uhh, uhhh…….”

Laud just let out a moan that sounded like crying.

“Take that thing away.”

Leshak pointed at Laud with the tip of his chin.

“Yes, Your Highness.”

The soldiers dragged Laud away, who had ceased to resist and soon disappeared. He would be locked up in the dark basement until LeShak gives his next order.

“Abadd.”

Leshak quickly called Abadd.

“Yes, Your Highness.”

“I don’t think I have anything for me to do now…… Am I right?”

“Yes …… ?”

Abadd tilted his head at the sudden remark.

“What are you talking about?”

The battle is over. The damage to the troops could not be ignored, but the enemy was annihilated.

Seven years of war ended here.

It was over, there would be no more meeting of the pale dawn on a bloody battlefield.

There were many things left to do, such as dealing with the mountain of corpses, sorting out the wounded, repairing the collapsed castle walls, and what to do with the prisoners of the enemy country, but for now, it was over.

The direction of the five defeated nations, the shift of power within the Empire, and even complex things like the changing of borders would follow one after another, but it was over for now.

“I will leave the rest to you. Keep in mind we must keep tracking the Gett scion. Work harder.”

“What? Of course, Your Highness,”

Leshak was already walking.

“Your Majesty!”

Leshak raised his hand instead of replying.

And that was all. It seemed that Leshak would sincerely leave all these more tedious tasks to his subordinates.

Abadd nodded, sighing.

“Your Majesty has changed. In the past, no matter how much I told him to let me do this kind of work, he didn’t listen.”

As expected, the person who listened to these words was Sidris.

“You should have been the one who said that, Head Knight Berheri.”

“Oh, yes. But only because no matter how much I said it, I knew there was no way that His Highness would say “then I’ll go rest alone” and really walk away with easy steps like that.”

Siddris clicked his tongue at the forthright reply.

“Then His Majesty did what you were supposed to do anyway.”

“Who said it wasn’t so? I’m just saying that His Majesty has changed. It must be for an absurd reason. For someone who’s waiting in the bedroom or something like that.”

Sidris decided not to listen to this anymore.

Someone said that people born without shame cannot distinguish between a favor, and entitlement.

“Good luck then.”

Abadd jumped up.

“What? Are you going to bail on me too? Can’t you see those corpses? There are so many things to do, and you’re asking me to do them all!?”

“You don’t have to do everything. You are in a position to just stand there and give instructions.”

“But still! You know how much I care about it!”

“You are the chief Guardian Knight. And if we are given another mission, I’ll serve His Highness. Oh no, I’m going to lose him. I need to go quickly.”

“You bastard, you’re doing it on purpose!”

He didn’t even have to answer that either.

Sidris walked quickly, hiding a mischievous smile.

“Take care, Chief Knight.”

Leshak’s pace towards the bedroom quickened.

It’s much later than he thought. The bite marks on his ear lobe will already be gone.

Leshak didn’t like the fact that he couldn’t keep his promise every time. Perhaps Radan has already thought of him as an untrustworthy man. He didn’t know, perhaps he already thought that his promises were useless.

“No, damn it!”

Leshak ran his fingers through his hair.

“Then, I’m in trouble.”

It was the first time that his feeling for another was so intense, so passionate, so imperfect, and so insecure.

It seemed as if the words ‘my heart is with Radan’ were literally true.

A piece of my body must have been empty. That’s why he felt feel like he was endlessly hungry.

So far, he had never felt anything lacking in his life.

He was the pinnacle of others, and so he felt it was his job to keep his subordinates on the right track and in their proper place.

There was never a time when this sense of duty was burdensome.

Rather, the hectic duties of being the Crown Prince were the driving force that kept him from feeling boredom.

If there were no work to do, his perfect life, which had nothing more to accomplish, would have melted into boredom.

So, the thirst caused in him by Radan was intense.

Through Radan, he realized that there was something he wanted to do, not something he had to do.

Maybe if he’d started off as that kind of person.

He would have been a man who could imprison, bind, and coerce if he wanted to.

That fact didn’t come as a surprise or anything new.

He just didn’t want Radan to know that he really was such an imperfect, unstable, wayward human being.

“Shit.”

Leshak had almost run along the long corridor from the castle to the front courtyard, and at that moment when was about to climb the stairs,

“Your Majesty.”

Incris called to him.

His whole body was wet with sweat. The cotton cloth covering his belly was stained red.

Incris was a wounded man who was not supposed to be standing or walking around. It was the same for Glenn, who was supporting him.

Glenn was supposed to guard Radan’s bedroom.

“Why are you here?”

Leshak looked at Glenn’s shoulders, which were bent toward the floor.

“I’m sorry……, Your Highness. That is,”

There was only one meaning meant by Glenn being somewhere other than in front of the bedroom. It meant that there was no longer an entity he needed to protect in his bedroom.

Lines erupted on Leshak’s face.

“What,”

“It was the work of the Gett heir, I think. We searched for him everywhere,”

Crack.-.

A strange sound came from his hand. Perhaps it was from too much pressure.

“What do you mean, “it”?”

The answer did not from Glenn or Incris, instead, came from behind them.

“Your Majesty.”

It was Sidris.

He had to perform this duty in place of Abadd, but because of Leshek’s speed, he was one step behind.

Thanks to that, he was able to hear the news that had just come up from the basement first. The soldiers who had descended into the dungeon were the first to catch up with Leshak.

“Go to the dungeon.”

The basement was where Leshak just ordered Laud de Ranadia to be imprisoned.

“It is said to be in the basement.”
